Here's my previous inquiry:
I have put several hours into streamlining Trans Wisc, and trying to set the stage for group activity. But the further I get into this, the more strongly I feel Milwaukee should be a parent level site, with neighborhoods & suburbs as Groups within it. Then the site structure would serve the hub/neighborhood relationship much more fittingly. Messages could be sent to the whole Milw area network, and the Forum could be used more appropriately for area-wide Workgroups (Food, Transport, etc).
I know you said the idea is to keep the structure as flat as possible, so groups can learn from each other. But what’s to stop people from other parts of the state checking out Trans Milwaukee whenever they want?
Here’s an example of how it gets messy: to create the Assets category we talked about, I have to put it in Trans Wisc. But it doesn't really make sense for us to share DVDs and tools with people in Ashland, several hrs away, or even Madison, 90 mins away. And Discussions within groups feel not that useful to me because they’re not categorized.
I realize these are limitations of Ning, not of Transition US, but making major cities like Milwaukee parent sites would be an improvement I think. Your thoughts?
Thanks!
Nicole
Did you ever get my question about creating a parent-level site for Milwaukee?
Thanks,
Nicole
I have kids at home during the day, which makes talking on the phone challenging, but I can often be available in the late afternoon or evening. Next week, Monday and Tuesday work best. Do either of those days work for you? If you'd like me to call you, please send your number. I don't see it listed here.
We don't have a microphone, so I guess I'm not Skype-ready at the moment.
Is there a way for members to post to the group through their email program? Or do they have to log on to the site to post messages?
I'm still getting a handle on the way different pages are nested within others, or not. For example, it took me a while to realize that Transition Wisconsin was not linked with Transition US, that I had to create a separate profile in each. And eventually I figured out that the group I created within Trans Wisc does not have its own events, blogs, etc. so that when I post those, they will show up for the entire Trans Wisc network, yes? Is there any way to have our own events, etc? And is there a way to make Transition WISE have other (neighborhood) groups nested within it, instead of nested within Trans Wisc?
Is there a way to let multiple people edit a document or add to a database? We'd like to create an asset inventory that could be used for starting projects and possibly later feed into a timebanking system. If that is something we need to create and store elsewhere, such as on a wiki site, it would be nice to have a prominent link on the Transition WISE page.
Which gets to my wishlist. If I could design this thing from the ground up, I would envision a simple menu somewhere for things like links, files, subgroups/partners, projects, and (because we're likely to be more of a hub for the time being) neighborhood groups. Is there some way to create this sort of menu? Perhaps under the Transition Wisc menu? Or off to the right, above admin options?
Thanks again!
Nicole
